Ten years down the track and the Idea Stores are going strong. I am going to visit the original one in Bow, Tower Hamlet. Started 10 years ago and another PPP of sorts there are now four in the Tower Hamlet council/borough. The key funders for the Bow St library included
- Tower Hamlets Council
- UK Online
- Bow People’s Trust
- The Big Lottery Fund (formerly the New Opportunities Fund)
and the next three Stores (the word library does not appear) also had a range of funders.
The key to the success of these libraries from the Idea Store website
is responding to the community’s needs by achieving the following
‘Idea Stores are more than just a library or a place of learning. As well as the traditional library service, they offer a wide range of adult education classes, along with career support, training, meeting areas, cafes and arts and leisure pursuits.’
As we know this model is becoming more popular and necessary in New Zealand and we have seen examples of this partnership and hubbing in various cities…most recently in Levin at (please add other examples in the comments field)
I am keen to visit and add to the knowledge my colleague Pat Street gained when she visited some years ago and also take a look at how the building works 10 years down the track and see how the locals are using it as well as the other spaces in the facility.
